Here's a two-for-one post...
This month of August we are "off" from school. We've been having a lighter version of school these past summer months, and now have taken our official summer month off for the arrival of our new baby... coming soon (but not soon enough)! It has been fun for me to see the kids still involve themselves in learning and creating. A lot of reading and projects have ensued - Jonas mowed my name into the lawn, Leslie made a cardboard astronaut costume, and the rest of the kids got involved in making many, many, many, many, many control panels for their "spaceship". Evelyn even color-coordinated her princesses with the SORRY game board. I love homeschooling (especially in our month off)!
As for the 3 scoops, today was a momentous day. For each hour of church that our kids can remain reverent, they get a scoop of ice cream. In addition to that, if they can tell us about that hour (sacrament meeting talks, sharing time topic, and Primary class discussion) then they get a topping to match (thanks Kiersten). TODAY ALL 6 KIDS GOT 3 SCOOPS AND 3 TOPPINGS!
Miraculous (but not without some work behind it)...
Every day this week before the kids' beloved snack time we had a reverence practice (sitting with arms folded and reflecting on Jesus and then sharing our thoughts with each other, gradually increasing our time) and an obedience game we as parents would make up spur of the moment. (See silly hat wearing pictures, thank you Daddy!)
With prayer and practice, reverence prevailed this Sunday! We'll keep working on it, we know there will be 0 scoop days and 3 scoop days. We are just excited about our 3 scoop day today!

Great job, Kids and Parents! Hey... I was reverent too. Do I get scoops and toppings????
The "scoop" incentive is probably the best idea I've ever heard. I'm going to steal it.
What a tremendous and historic day!I knew it could happen and I am very proud of you all. Congratulations on your fist ever all for three and three for all day! Many of up grownups should take a lesson,
A-MAZ-ING. Good job, Dresden. You're pretty awesome. And good job, Bush kids. Did you even have that much ice cream on hand? That's a lot of scoops.
Jonas looks just like you, Dresden.
Hey, yesterday our kids all got 3 scoops and 3 toppings too! I think Isaac was so proud of himself.
And your kids are so creative and you do such a great job with them. Can't wait to hear of your new arrival!
That is such a great idea. I am going to have to try it. I like the practice time everyday also.
Thanks for the new idea!!!
I think everyone (kids and parents) should be rewarded (here and in heaven...!)
Bob and I had to walk to the store and get ice cream on Saturday night...! (Exercise to get ice cream, hmm)
And I think it is the hat - or should I take offense that his silly face looks like me...?
I love love love this idea I came home and told Jer all about it. WE are totally going to do it.
Thanks so much for the idea.
Dresden you rock! You are always full such great ideas. My parents used to do something like this (not that I can remember, but they refreshed my memory). When we were in church, if they had to remind us to be quiet they would hold up two fingers which meant that we lost a scoop of ice cream, then if they had to do it again, they would hold up 1 finger, and so on. Or at least it was something like that. But I LOVE the idea of them having to tell you about what they learned about, and I love the practice time during the week. We tried that a few times and it was really hard for them, of course that was a few years ago. But I also LOVE how you have them share things that they thought about during the practice time. I love to hear ideas from you, you are full of a lot of great ones!
Thanks!
