School started, and restarted, and restarted again...

We've had a lot of interruptions to our school, but that is life, right?!  We have the philosophy that every day is a day of learning, no matter if we get books out or complete a page of math.  We recognize that if we have a goal of learning from everyone and everything, knowledge will grow!

Here are some fun pictures of our school year so far...

Organizing on our "first day"

Prepping the day

Awesome field trip to Thanksgiving Point, matched our studies of early American history this year!

Jonas has joined the National Guard!!!!!!!  And Bob had the honor of swearing him in.

And a few pictures of Troy's homecoming dance/date.

Art History!

We studied art history in the month of January.  Along with that, we created our own art trying to imitate the various -isms.

Whoa time is flying!

We took Leslie to BYU-Idaho this past weekend.  We had such a wonderful and silly time with her. She is one of our best friends, as well as a superb example to us!  Pictures are worth a thousand words... (we took too many selfies to count!)

Book Reports

After much pleading, the kids have been doing book reports for school.  Here is one of Micah's.

Wonder

Wonder is a book of a normal life and a boy of 11 who says he is normal.  But he really isn't.  August's face deformity happened at birth.  August had been homeschooled all his life but when he finally went to public school, everyone got hit.  Some were hit with disgust, others with hate, and some with wonder.  This book is about miracles and threats, friends and enemies, notes and punches, and hate and love.  This book is about wonder.

Shakespeare

I had the kids adapt a few of Shakespeare's plays into 5 minute plays.  Owen did a whiteboard play, Troy used my pigs for Hamlet, Micah used stuffed animals for Macbeth (very well done, but several video clips!), and Evelyn used apples and bananas for Romeo and Juliet.

They turned out awesome.

Poetry Month 2016

Earth
By Owen

Before
I was here, I
Often
Saw
People
Having fun and
Enjoying their
Real life on
Earth

Humans happen to
Inhabit a happy home
That is just called Earth.

There once was a planet named Earth.
We inhabited here from our Birth.
It’s made up of water,
It’s getting quite hotter.
It’s constantly growing in worth.

Disc Golf
By Owen

Golfing with a disc,
Is really quite a risk.
For when it flies aloft,
It isn’t very soft.

You have to throw it hard,
To get across the yard,
And get it in the chains,
Sometimes it really pains!

Car Cares
By Owen

There once was a gal from Uganda,
Her name was Rebecca LaFonda.
She hated to walk,
Wanted people to gawk,
So she drove in a purple-pink Honda.

Cinq”pain”
By Owen

Painful
Throbbing, bleeding
Agony, stinging still
It hurts me to the very core
Severe

Paper Pathway
By Owen

The paper was my pathway clearing my
perplexed and puzzled mind. The pencil, like
my dreams led me to sketch out my future
and hopes.  Eraser, as forgiveness blanking and
clearing my troubled journey, allowing me to
start all over on the scroll of life.

Echo Poem
By Troy

Why would you take a pill?
Ill.
How does it feel to be sick?
Ick.
Do you have a cold?
Old.
How does it feel to die?
I…
Are you going?  Goodbye!
Bye…

Rainbow
By Troy

beautiful and bright,
colors drifting through the sky,
full of joy and light.

A midnight walk
By Micah

the moon was my flashlight and
it lit up the way as I took another
step.
the trees were like the wind as their
leaves rustle right next to me on
my midnight walk

I am
By micah

I am dying
I wonder if I will ever walk again
I hear the doctors rustling
I see a light
I want to die peacefully
I am dying

I pretend I am sleeping
I feel cold
I touch my other bony hand
I worry no one will remember me
I cry out
I am almost gone

I understand I might not go to heaven
I say goodbye world
I dream that I am young
I try to fall asleep
I hope I made a difference in Life
I am dead

Adventure
By Evelyn

Adventure,
Hiking, packing, seeing,
New, fun, great, lazy,
Sleepy, blah,
Nothing, resting, sleeping,
Boredom

Rainbows
By Evelyn

Rainbows are awesome,
They have lots of colors,
I love the colors.

Boring store
By Evelyn

Brainquest says, “Its fun to be smart!”
But I won’t add that to my kart.
I look at apples that’ll bump and bruise,
But to a busy person, that’s not news.
I look at books called “Expert cooks!”
I don’t have time for those cook books.
This mart is really quite a bore,
I think it’s time to leave the store!

Paper
By Evelyn

Paper
Thin, lined, flat, white,
Written, crumpled, used up,
Turning pages while reading books,
Writing

An Echo of Heavenly Father's Love
By Mom

Blue, orange, pink coloring the sky
I
Sparkling starts, sun, moon above

Ode to Smurf
By Leslie

I am blue and small
I wonder if I will ever grow
I hear the lazy snoring
I see the tall trees
I want to fit in among all the smurfs
I am blue and small

I pretend I am big and strong
I feel pretty smurfy
I touch my mushroom house
I worry about Gargamel and his cat
I cry when I get lost
I am blue and small

I understand my place in Smurfville
I say “Papa Smurf”
I dream about Smurfette
I try to be smurfy all day
I hope I can make the smurfiest poem
I am blue and small

(Untitled)
By Leslie

Silent is the absence of the musician
Tender is the language of memory
Luxuriant is the soft sunshine
All will cry
But none will run
What is glory
