Summer homeschool is about over for us. We will start up our “regular” homeschool starting August 4. We’ve been taking it easy, but also maintaining and growing in skills. I have only required basic school work, which in our house includes chores, scriptures, journal writing, one page of math, an activity of the day, and reading. It has helped us keep the routine of learning in our life, which I believe is the essence of homeschool. We live and learn. We can’t get away from it! It has also helped the twins, entering “1st grade” to get used to sitting down just for a little bit and focusing on reading, sharing, and dictating ideas.
We’ve been involved with the library AND Barnes and Noble’s reading programs (earning free books and coupons for fun outings). We have visited the library and seen and been a part of shows about African drums, reptiles, magic, dogs, music, stories, and safety. We’ve had some fun projects and crafts. We’ve drawn pictures and gone through tons of paper. We’ve worked on our garden (and eaten from it too!) We've tried new recipes. Jonas had cub scout camp. We also had Jonas and Leslie take their first national test to evaluate how they were doing. I am very proud to announce that Jonas scored in the 99% and Leslie in the 92%. Way to go kids!!!
We’ve also had a lot of time to play and read and relax and play and nap and take walks and play… I think we’ve had a great summer!
We've included a slideshow of some pictures. They represent just a part of what we’ve done this summer. A lot of our ideas and activities have been posted before, so these are mostly pictures of their paperwork.

The August Greenjackets
We took the kids to their first baseball game, courtesy of the free tickets for military appreciation day. We saw the Augusta Greenjackets playing, and the kids loved it. We saw a lot of great hits, followed by great catches. Evelyn was tired, cranky, and thirsty - she didn't understand why we wouldn't let her drink our neighbor's beer... and we are too cheap to spend $4 per drink. We left before the Augusta Greenjackets lost in the 12 inning, 5-4. They must have missed our cheers.
Evelyn loves reading... just like all the other kids!
"Book!" "Book!" is a frequent cry at our house. Evelyn has joined the others in the love of reading. If she is ever cranky (if?!!!) then all we have to do is sit down and read a book with her. Here she is copying Leslie and reading (out loud in jibberish) "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe".

Independence Day
Our annual ice cream dinner - note Micah's joy as he looks at the toppings on the counter!
I'd like to share our weekend from the kids' point of view...
Jonas: We went on a vacation to Grandma and Grandpa's house for the 4th of July. Before we saw the fireworks we were walking to a stadium to see a concert when we saw a helicopter start to take start to take off! And then, 2 jets flew over our heads and did a circle over us. Then the helicopter took off and the pilot waved at us! Then we went and got good seats in the sadium. We saw Lonestar perform for 1 1/2 hours. Then we saw the fireworks. It was awesome!
Leslie: We had fun at grandma and grandpa's house! We saw fire works and a singer! We had an ice cream dinner too! Madisen is moving to Texas. It is sad. (She is a friend I have that I made at the church that grandma goes to.) She invited me to a pool. We went to Stevie B's too! We had fun!
Owen: I am happy that we got to go to Stevi B's at Grandma and Grandpa's house.
Troy: I like it that we got to have an ice cream dinner. I like it that we got to play with water balloons at Grandma and Grandpa's house. I like it how we got to go to Stevi B's.
Micah: I am thankful for that we could have a good time with the ice cream dinner. My favorite part of the ice cream dinner was when we ate the ice cream pizza. I am thankful for that we got to have the other ice cream dinner (editor's note - dessert after a normal dinner!). I am thankful for that we got to watch the fireworks.
Evelyn: "Bana!" (Banana) "Bana!" (Grandma) "Bana!" (Grandpa) "Bana!" (Pajamas) "Bana!" (Panda) The word for the week was obviously "Bana" and it has several meanings. Lucky us.
We sure enjoyed ourselves this week!
